I actually finished this book a few days ago, but have only just found time to sit down and write a review.

I listened to the audiobook for this one and enjoyed the book, the story and the narrator. Sometimes I can’t let myself enjoy an audiobook because of the narrator but Jennifer Lim did an awesome job. Would definitely recommend this as a listen if you’re into audiobooks.

I think I may have mentioned in a previous post that I was reading this as it was the chosen side read in the Goodreads book group I am a member of. We read Celeste Ng’s previous book Everything I Never Told You last year and I have been wracking my brains trying to remember that book in order to compare but for the life of me I cannot remember it! Which doesn’t bode well I suppose. My personal opinion, I enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere a little more…just a smidge. However the general feeling within the Goodreads group is that the first one was better.

Little Fires Everywhere is about a mother and daughter who have constantly moved around their entire lives. Never stayed anywhere for long, made friends, ties or laid any foundations. Their most recent place to call “home” is Shaker Heights; an area where everywhere is perfect, everyone is successful and there are certain rules to abide by. Pearl, the daughter in the mother daughter duo, befriends the children of the Richardsons and the book goes through the relationships within that family, the dynamic differences between the two families and reveals some of the secrets hidden within each.

I struggled with the beginning of this book, I won’t lie but I blame that on my concentration levels rather than the book itself. About a third of the way through, I became invested in the characters and the storyline and wanted to find out the truth about what was going on. That said, some of the outcomes of the story seemed a little unbelievable to me…

You’re telling me, seriously, Mia, in the rush and bustle of running out of town was able to go through her photographs and leave some behind for the Richardsons to find. Furthermore, the Richardsons were able to look at some abstract photographs and instantly know which one was made for who?! Seems a little unrealistic to me.

The part where Elena sneaks a peak at her friends computer at the abortion clinic…please?! I am fairly sure, if you were that adamant that you didn’t want someone to get hold of those records, you would not have left your computer unlocked with the file open knowing how desperately Elena wanted those records. Fairly sure that would not happen.

After that little rant, you would think I’d given the book a bad rating on Goodreads, but I gave it a pretty generous 4 stars. On reflection a few days later, I think I would have given it a 3.5 (if that was possible). Overall, good book, fairly easy to listen to and I would recommend it if people fancy an easygoing audio book listen.
