Review: Twisted Love by Ana Huang

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! I cannot believe that this has been a four day week, it’s felt like the longest wait for the weekend ever. I can’t wait to close my work laptop at the end of today and not look at it again until Monday. I feel like I’m so negative about my job lately, which isn’t pleasant. I shouldn’t be really and I should be grateful, but my goodness I could really do without the stress of it right now.

Book 📖

This book of course needs no introduction. Twisted Love by @authoranahuang is literally all over Bookstagram, Book Tok, Twitter; all of the book socials, so I decided it was about time that I picked it up. I buddy read this with a friend and had a fun time with it.

Description 🔖

Alex Volkov is a devil blessed with the face of an angel and cursed with a past he can’t escape.

Driven by a tragedy that has haunted him for most of his life, his ruthless pursuits for success and vengeance leave little room for matters of the heart.

But when he’s forced to look after his best friend’s sister, he starts to feel something in his chest:

A crack.
A melt.
A fire that could end his world as he knew it.

Ava Chen is a free spirit trapped by nightmares of a childhood she can’t remember.

But despite her broken past, she’s never stopped seeing the beauty in the world…including the heart beneath the icy exterior of a man she shouldn’t want.

Her brother’s best friend.
Her neighbor.
Her savior and her downfall.

Theirs is a love that was never supposed to happen—but when it does, it unleashes secrets that could destroy them both…and everything they hold dear.

General Thoughts 🤔

I will be completely transparent and admit that I wasn’t expecting a huge lot from this book. I find that lots of “viral” books end up being a little bit anti climatic and the hype is bigger than it deserves to be. I won’t say that this book blew my socks off, but I did definitely enjoy it more than I expected it to and I had a great time with it.

It’s definitely a binge worthy read; I think I read the first half of the book in one evening as I just couldn’t put it down. As soon as things had started to get a little tense between Ava and Alex, I was hooked and completely invested in their relationship.

Characters 👫👭👬

Ava was a sweet girl, but I think she was definitely the type to be outwardly sweet and underestimated by other people. She had a fiery side that I loved seeing come out of her. I really liked that she wasn’t afraid of Alex, her own feelings or letting Alex know about himself. It was great to see Alex made to feel uncomfortable.

Although I did love Alex and Ava together and I was cheering them on the whole time, I didn’t particularly like Alex as a person very much. I found him to be overbearing, controlling and extremely stubborn. It was nice that Ava was able to break down some of his walls, but I still think the mean streak in him was bubbling under the surface.

Writing Style ✍️

There was nothing over complicated about this author’s writing style and it really wasn’t needed. The story was told in a linear fashion aside from the odd memory flashback from Ava and Alex and alternated between their POVs (which of course I really liked). The steamy scenes in the story were written well and I didn’t find myself cringing too much. Those kinds of scenes can sometimes make me feel a bit weird, but I am happy to confirm that Ana Huang’s style of smut was enjoyable to read.

Conclusion & Scoring 🎖

I gave in to the hype, I started the Twisted series and I don’t completely regret it. Is this the best book I’ve ever read in my life? No. Is it completely terrible? No. I enjoyed this book for what it was; trashy, romantic smut with characters that I kind of liked but kind of disliked at the same time. I buddy read this with a friend which definitely made it a better experience. I think I’ll continue with the series to see where it goes, but whether or not I’ll complete it is still undecided.
